Government Step Towards legitimize suicide: Socio-Economic Factors leading Suicide Attempt in Youth
On Wednesday, government has announced that it would legitimize suicide. No doubt, it is deliberate to do so, as those who attempt suicide ever lacks social, economical as very important emotional support. India records to have the world’s highest suicides rates with people aged between 15 – 29 years. Every year nearly 30-40 people per 100,000 Indians attempt suicides.Major cause of this concern is the utmost pressure from parents to perform well in national board exam, especially in class XII. In the attempt to fail in succeeding themselves, students aged between 16-18 undergo pressure. In the year 2013, 2,471 students have attempted owing to the failure in the examination.
At the same time, gender bias consequences is the major factor among women leading to suicide attempt. Independent decision making, either to postpone marriage or to attain prematital sexare factors that clash with the traditional parental styles. As a result, physical and mental abuse thereby leads to the mental disorders ending up with suicide. According to the study in 2008 conducted in Goa, these factors are more prevalent among women.
Moreover, independent decision making, premarital sex and rural residence are attributing factors leading towards taking the steps towards suicide. According to the report stated by WHO, 75% of the suicide happens in low and middle income countries.
On the whole, according to NCRPB, the major common reason addressed for suicides is nothing but only “Family problems”
