Two Minutes Delay in Umbilical Cord Cutting can Enhance your New Born Lives

Late clamping of umbilical cord increases the anti-oxidant capacity of mature newborns with moderate inflammatory effects born through induced labour.

According to the research conducted, scientists have found that 2 minutes delay in cutting the umbilical cord results in the better development of first day for the new born lives. The study was conducted by scientists of University of Granada and the San Cecilio Clinical Hospital (Granada). They conjointly found that the late clamping of the umbilical cord boosts the anti-oxidant capacity of mature newborns with moderate inflammatory effects in the case of those born from induced labor. The time frame of cutting umbilical cord is known as umbilical cord clamping, which extensively influences the resistance to oxidative stress in newborns. The term oxidative stress refers to the imbalance created between the production of harmful free radicals as well as the ability of the body to detoxify them via antioxidants neutralization.

According to the professor of University of Granada, Julio José Ochoa Herrera, umbilical cord clamping is one of the most intermittent surgical activity practiced upon humans. Despite of having proofs on such practice, the exact clamping for timing was not known.

On carrying out the research, the tests were performed on a group of 64 healthy pregnant women at San Cecilio Clinical Hospital in Granada, Spain. They all had a normal pregnancy and spontaneous vaginal delivery. Half of the newborns’ umbilical cord were cut in 10 seconds after delivery, whereas, the other half after two minutes. The result showed that there was an increase in the antioxidant capacity of mature newborns and there was constraint of inflammatory effects in the case of induced delivery.
