WAM – A New Twitter Tool for Women to Report Harassment

Twitter collaborated with Women, Action and Media to launch a tool dedicated to encounter women harassment, especially related to gender. The group will oversee reports and work with Twitter to perform a fast resolution.

This year, Twitter has taken a strong and an active initiative against harassment and inappropriate content. Now this social media site is using another weapon against online demon and annoyer.In order to report abuse on the network and get that issue resolved within 24 hrs, Twitter has successfully launched a new tool for people. The tool is partnership with a nonprofit organization called WAM (Women, Action and media).

The role of WAM lies in monitoring the reports on Twitter and bringing them to the social media network. It will also record Twitter’s response to these reports. With a set up of a simple form, the tool enables women to report harassment. Once a few basic checks are done, the reports will be escalated to twitter and will be resolved within 24 hrs. The complaints will be kept updated with how their case is being looked upon.The WAM tool primarily aims towards serving women on the network who are targeted in online harassment. The partnership with WAM will be predominantly aimed towards gender related harassment and will also look into racism and violent threats.

Now anyone, who is undergoing gender harassment can use WAM’s new Twitter Harassment Reporting tool in order to submit a detailed complaint. Through the tool, a complaint can make sure that the website is aware of exactly what kind of abuse the person is experiencing such as racism, impersonation, sexism, hate speech, rape or death threats, as well as revenge porn. Twitter will be the one to conclude what to do at the end, but WAM will intensify the validated reports to the service and will monitor the Twitter’s response.

In addition to helping women get their reports heard, WAM will also use the data it has collected in order to apprehend how does the women harassment converges with other types of harassment, so that Twitter can upgrade their response to specific situations.

Recent report conducted by the Pew Research Internet project states that 30% of women on Twitter between ages 18 to 24 have experienced sexual harassment. This is a serious issue that need to be looked at and should be fixed with acceptable measures making Twitter safe place for women. This strong initiative by Twitter and WAM will significantly help to put an end to this harassment in a short period of time.

With the onset of this new feature on Twitter, it will massively help women users to speak free without getting scared of being targeted by harassment, abuse and threats. On whole, this new tool will definitely bring a new change on how people treat women in Twitter.
