Left in its original state, a basement can be the darkest, dreariest part of your home. With a little work and a sound design plan, you can turn your basement into the perfect subterranean hangout spot. Your specific design will depend on the demographics of your household and your particular tastes. With so many great ideas to choose from, you should have no problem finding the amenities and aesthetics that are right for you. Here are four design ideas to consider as you plan your re-worked basement.
Bar
Have you reached that age where certain aspects of the bar environment still appeal to you, but actually getting dressed and hitting the town feels like too much work? Then you could create the perfect solution by making an informal bar in the basement of your home. With just a raised wooden counter, some bar stools, a refrigerator, and a tap, you can turn your basement into the quintessential neighborhood lounge. You can complete the aesthetic with some folksy signs, sports memorabilia, and traditional bar decor. Installing a bar in your home is a great way to entertain guests and family members alike.
Home Theater
Watching movies and series is another activity that contemporary folks prefer to do in their own homes. But while getting bundled up and trudging over to the theater is no longer the tradition it used to be, watching shows on a laptop or smartphone is hardly an ideal alternative. By installing a big screen, surround sound, and comfortable tiered seating in your basement, you can create an authentic yet homey theater experience. A home theater is a great idea for movie buffs and others that enjoy movies.
Game Room
Whether you’re into cards, board games, or table games, you should be able to create the perfect space for games in your basement. Pool tables and ping pong tables are especially great because they provide hours of reliable entertainment for family members and guests alike. With these types of activities available, you can ensure that boredom is never a problem in the basement. Game rooms are a lot of fun, they can create hours of entertainment for all members of the family. That means more time to bond as a family, which is a great thing in and of itself. There are plenty of different ways to use your game too, so be creative and imagine everything and anything that you can. For example, you can consider hanging some game wall art to make your game room even more fun.
Play Area for Kids
As you kids get older, they’ll appreciate having a space to play independently. The basement, if designed properly, can become their favorite hangout from early childhood right through adolescence. To create a play area, make sure anything hazardous is out of the way. Then, add cubbies for storage, small tables for arts and crafts, and a comfy carpet for playing.
While you might be tempted to focus on structural issues like foundation repair, you should also consider making serious changes to your basement’s overall design. Follow the tips above to create a more enjoyable space.

Your suggestion of turning the basement into a game area for the kids was extremely interesting. My sons have always wanted a playspace for their own since the adults usually take up the living room whenever we have gatherings here, so the basement could be a great place for that. I’ll look around for any basement remodeling experts I can hire in order for me to have some help with transforming that area.
