Whether you are the one who is retiring or you’re planning a party for someone else, it’s important to be creative and have fun during the party planning process. If you aren’t sure where to begin, here are five foolproof ideas for a retirement party.
Host a Dinner Party
Everyone loves getting dressed up, and a dinner party is a perfect occasion to do so. Hire a good catering service, get out your fancy tableware, and enjoy the company of friends and family while celebrating retirement in style. You can make it even more special by hiring a band to play the retiree’s favorite songs.
When considering which food to order, try to consider those with food restrictions. If you’re ordering in Mexican, for example, make sure to include some mild and vegetarian options. It’s important that these options are substantive enough to make an entire meal, not just a side dish or two. Keep this in mind when ordering. Also, make sure to include two dessert options—some individuals do not like, or cannot eat, chocolate. Thus, have at least one option without this common ingredient.
Enjoy an Evening Out
If the retiree has a favorite restaurant or bar, you can make a reservation to hold their retirement party there. Whether it’s an upscale establishment or a local dive bar, the retiree will love celebrating in their favorite place with all their favorite people. Make sure to book several weeks in advance to make sure you can secure a private room, if possible.
Have Fun in the Sun
If you’re planning a retirement party during the summer, why not host it poolside? Cook food on the grill, get a DJ to play some tunes, and let your guests enjoy cooling off in the pool with their favorite drinks. Give the party a Hawaiian luau theme and decorate accordingly to make it even more fun.
The best time of day to do this is in the evening, especially considering some guests might have heat intolerance. Try and reserve spaces under umbrellas and provide shaded options so guests can be as comfortable as possible. If you know several guests will struggle with the heat, consider giving out hand fans as party favors.
Plan Something Mysterious
If the retiree is a fan of detective stories, throwing them a murder mystery-themed retirement party will be a thrill. When planning this type of party, you need to know exactly who is coming so you can assign character roles. Once you have that figured out, you can start thinking about decorations and food.
Make It Memorable
One of the best ways to ensure the retiree has a good time at their party is to create a photo album or slideshow. You can include pictures from their career and their personal life to create a beautiful collection of memories for everyone to look at during the event. You may also want to buy them a commemorative gift or plaque they can display in their home with pride.
Additionally, consider setting up a photo booth. There are professional services that can do the entire setup for you, or you can DIY this project. Purchase a Polaroid camera with plenty of film, and have at least one person manning the photo station. Collect the photos as you go and place them into an album. Consider having each guest write well wishes under their picture for a great keepsake.
No matter which of these party ideas you choose, the important thing is to ensure the retiree has a fun time they will remember for years to come. As long as you include exciting entertainment, good food, and lots of friends and family, you are certain to throw a foolproof retirement party.
