  • Jr Women Hockey Test Series: India Defended New Zealand with 2-2 Goals

On November 6, 2014, The Indian Junior women Hockey Team gave a tough fight against New Zealand in the current series. The team has wrapped up the hosts with 2-2 draws in their second match of 6th match series that was played at TET Multisport Centre, Stratford. The hosts (New Zealand junior black Sticks women) started brightly with Kelsey Smith by giving 1-0 lead of the initial goal in the first half. After then, India made desperate attempts to score, but owing to the strong defense line given by the opponents, could not succeed in putting the ball in net.

At the end of the first half the score was 0-1.The second half proved to be more enthusiastic for the Indian players. They fought with all strength. This results a close range goal that was hit from the stick of Anupa Barla, thus, adding score in India’s basket. As both the team looked for more scoring opportunities, the match got intensified. Soon, India was awarded with a penalty corner, but without leaving any room for mistakes, Jaspreet Kaur, flawlessly converted the opportunity into a goal making the score 2-1.On the other side, Rachel McCann of New Zealand fixed the game with another field goal 12 minutes from the final hooter, thus, equating the scores.

In the last quarter of the game, both the teams persuaded to create a few new scoring chances but could not materialize the opportunity and at the end of the game, the scoreboard showed a score of 2-2 indication the draw of the match.

In the 2-1 win yesterday in the first match of six-test series, Jude Menezes, the head coach said that, the win could be even better. He further added that “though we had 30 circle entries and 12 shots on goals, but we didn’t played as well as we did in our first match but India’s performance was quite improved. As we rotated some new players into new positions, it gave India a good chance to exploit the gap in the midfield”.

India will be again taking New Zealand on Novemeber 8, 2014 at 0730 hrs (IST) for their third match of the ongoing six-match series at TET Multisport Centre, Stratford, New Zealand.
