Statistics that were gathered by the World Health Organization demonstrate that as many as 3.5 billion people have some form of oral disease. Fortunately, by practicing good oral hygiene habits, many of them can be prevented. Flossing daily, brushing your teeth at least twice per day, eating a balanced diet, and getting regular check-ups at the dentist are critical steps you need to take to avoid dental issues. When it comes to prevention, becoming more aware of some of the most common dental problems people face, can also help to improve your oral health.

Stained Teeth

Certain kinds of medications, foods, trauma, and tobacco are all things that can stain your teeth. When it comes to removing stains and whitening the teeth you have three options at your disposal. The first of which consists of using an at-home whitening kit that features a plastic tray with whitening gel. You can also purchase whitening rinses and toothpaste at the local health store. However, for the best results, your dentist can utilize special lighting with a commercial-grade whitening agent to whiten your teeth.

Cavities

Plaque can be best described as being sticky bacteria that has a tendency of accumulating on the surface of your teeth. As it does this, it gradually corrodes the enamel, which is the protective layer of the tooth. Enamel loss can lead to tooth decay. In order for you to reduce your chances of getting cavities, ensure that you use toothpaste that has fluoride in it. But avoid taking fluoride supplements, as they are not healthy to actually ingest. Fluoride can cause a whole host of health problems if ingested. But, it is very good for your teeth, just don’t eat it.

Orthodontics

As people get older, it’s fairly common for them to experience abnormal alignment of the jaws and teeth. Orthodontics is a field of dentistry that specifically focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, and realignment of badly positioned jaws and teeth. Therefore, if you notice that you have misaligned bite patterns, an orthodontist can help to reposition your teeth. This can be a great way to be healthier and happier. Having an aligned jaw is a great thing in this day and age.

Chipped Teeth

Did you know that a chipped tooth is regarded as being the number one type of dental injury that people experience on a yearly basis? One of the leading causes of chipped teeth is physical trauma such as chomping too hard on a popcorn kernel. A dentist can use a crown to bond to your teeth to restore them to their original shape. Chipped teeth are never fun to deal with, so be sure to get those fixed.

Oral health issues can have a negative impact on your smile and an attractive smile tends to lower people’s self-esteem. Fortunately, with today’s dental technologies, you have access to a wide range of resources that can help to ensure that you practice good oral hygiene habits as well as to alleviate underlying oral health issues that you may be experiencing.
