It’s no secret that life can be full of challenges. This is especially true for anyone with a physical or mental disability.

Living with a disability can feel like an overwhelming burden for many people, and yet some individuals simply refuse to let their physical or mental condition hold them back from doing everything they want to accomplish in life.

This article takes a look at an inspiring story of hope that is absolutely unforgettable. It’s the story of Aron Ralston, a man who went through an experience that most of us couldn’t imagine surviving, and yet he managed to turn his physical trauma into a blessing.

Keep reading to learn more about his story of survival and hope.

Aron’s Background

Aron Ralston was born in October 1975 in Marion, Ohio, but then his family moved to Denver, Colorado when he was just 12. This move had a huge impact on his life because he soon became deeply involved in skiing and backpacking. In fact, he basically lived to spend time in the mountains.

A Thirst for Adventure

Living near the Rocky Mountains, Ralson developed a thirst for adventure at an early age. He went to school to become a mechanical engineer and yet continued to spend as much time in the wilderness as possible.

His career as an engineer wasn’t fulfilling, thus he eventually burned out and decided to pursue his true passion for climbing mountains. In 2002 he quit his job and moved to the gorgeous town of Aspen, Colorado, determined to make his dream a reality.

The Moment Everything Changed

In April of 2003, Ralston decided to take a solo hiking trip through Bluejohn Canyon in Utah. The slot canyon is beautiful, and yet it can also make for treacherous hiking.

During this hike, Ralson was descending from one section of the canyon to another when a boulder became dislodged, crushing his right hand against the canyon wall. Suddenly, he was trapped, with no way to call for help.

His Days in the Slot Canyon

Ralston was trapped for several days, unable to free himself from the weight of the boulder. He quickly ran out of food and water. He attempted to sever his own arm but was unable to cut through the bone with his pocket knife.

The Miracle

As he was slowly bleeding to death something occurred to him. He realized he could apply pressure to his arm and snap the bone. This would allow him to cut through the rest of the flesh without a problem.

The plan worked perfectly, and Ralston was able to complete the amputation and hike out of the slot canyon to find help.

Aron’s New Life

For many people, this event would have been a tragedy. But not for Aron Ralston. In fact, he would tell you this was the best thing that ever happened to him.

Ralston now spends most of his time speaking to groups about survival and adventure and learning to live with a disability. He continues to travel around the world, inspiring everyone around him and seeking new mountains to conquer.
