You might think that since your bathroom is too small to make any major changes, but that isn’t true. From small renovation projects to simple storage solutions, there are several ways to give yourself more space in your bathroom without taking up any of the existing square footage. With the following few changes and additions, you’ll be able to completely transform your bathroom.
Convert Your Tub to a Shower
The average American bathroom is only six feet by seven feet. Despite this limited space, many of these bathrooms have a large tub taking up the rest of the square footage. If you’re looking for a way to make your small bathroom seem bigger, consider a tub to shower conversion.
A good contractor can install an enclosure that turns your tub into a walk-in shower with multiple settings and handrails for safety. Most likely, you won’t even have to relocate any pipes or equipment in order to make it happen—all your contractor needs is room on either side of your bathtub and extra headspace at its top.
Add Storage Solutions
One of the biggest struggles when it comes to small spaces is having sufficient storage. Fortunately, there are a few options to add some extra storage in your bathroom. The wall above the toilet often goes to waste–consider installing shelving or cabinetry here to utilize this valuable vertical space.
If you’re in need of even more storage space, consider utilizing the area under the sink or even an in-floor storage cabinet to free up some of that limited counter space. Adding shelves or drawers to your cabinet under the sink can help you to efficiently utilize this area. Alternatively, in-floor cabinets are simple to install and make a great space for things like toilet paper, towels, or even unused bottles of hair care products.
Knock Down a Wall
Another way to open up some space in your bathroom is by knocking down a wall or two. This can be an economical way to add more storage and give you more room to breathe. If your bathroom is next to a room that is particularly large or generally unused, it may be worth it to take some of that square footage and apply it to your bathroom. This can give you room to add features like a bathtub or even a water closet for added privacy.
Before you go for it, make sure that doing so is legal in your area—and then get ready to do some major renovations. Depending on where you live and what you are changing, a permit may be required. Don’t forget about this step–especially if you plan to sell your house in the future. Speak with a professional about the costs of your remodel and how to optimize your budget.
Move the Toilet
The toilet is a big, bulky fixture, but necessary nonetheless. If your room is small and you’re looking to get rid of some clutter, simply moving it to another wall could give you an extra two feet of space for storage. This might not seem like much, but every little bit helps. Additionally, if there’s room elsewhere in your bathroom, consider placing it in a corner or against another wall. You could also look for a more low-profile toilet to maximize floor space as much as possible.
Bathrooms are often overlooked when building and can end up a bit cramped and impractical. Get more from your small bathroom by investing in a few simple upgrades or even larger renovations if your budget allows. Keep these small trending bathroom renovations in mind to benefit from more storage and maximize the use of this space.
