None of us want to get in the accident. However, sometimes it just isn’t in our control. When an accident happens, it’s a good idea to take some time to assess the situation and determine how best to proceed. You can take a few steps immediately to help with your healing process and lower your risk of developing further injuries. The following are tips on what to do when you have been in an accident.

Check for external injuries

The first and most pressing thing when you’re in an accident is to see to your safety. Especially if you go into shock, you may not immediately be aware of any damage you’ve taken, so as best as you can, give yourself a once over. Check yourself to see if you have any injuries, and check your passengers, too. Look for broken bones, severe cuts, burns, and internal injuries. If you’re having trouble moving or need immediate medical attention, call 911 for emergency assistance.

Call the police

Call your local police department and tell them what happened. Even in the case of a small accident, it can still be important to notify them of any possible hazards, such as broken glass on the road or a fluid spill. If it’s a severe accident, local police can help direct traffic around the accident and keep the road safe while the damage is being dealt with.

Check for damage to your vehicle

After making sure everyone is safe, check the damage to your car. Don’t try to move the vehicle if it’s on fire or has other hazards – get away from it! If everything looks and smells fine, Take pictures of your car’s front, back, and sides with your cell phone or digital camera so you can show them to an auto accident attorney if necessary. Also, after the accident, get the estimated repair costs and notify your insurance. You may need this later if you need to file a lawsuit.

Move your vehicle, if it’s safe to do so

If there are no injuries, and if you are sure the car is safe, try to move your car to a place of safety. Again, if there appears to be any danger present, whether from the car itself or from nearby traffic, don’t take the risk; your safety and the safety of the others involved is of utmost priority. Most times, the police or other first responders will arrive quickly enough to take care of such things, but if they instruct you to, be ready to try to keep things clear. Don’t worry about the other drivers on the road who may be annoyed by the accident; you have enough on your plate as it is.

Don’t resist medical care if you’ve been hurt

While few of us want to admit we need help, as mentioned above, sometimes we aren’t aware of injuries we’ve sustained when the adrenaline is still pumping from the accident. Trust the medical technicians who arrive on the scene, and let them examine you as best as they can. Small, unnoticed issues like sprains or broken bones can become major issues if left untreated, so don’t make a fuss if they ask you to let them help.

When we suffer the unfortunate tragedy of an accident, things tend to happen very quickly. It’s very important to know what needs to be done, and the steps to make sure that everything goes okay afterwards. Keep these things in mind, and while you always hope it never happens to you or those you love, you’ll be ready and prepared for the worst.
