As the temperature begins to drop, the impending winter weather can take a toll on your home, causing everything from roof leaks to frozen pipes. One of the best ways to prepare to prevent this is to utilize your water heater, furnace, and radiant heaters in order to keep your house warm. However, before the winter hits there are some simple maintenance tasks that you can do to help keep your home in good working order. These tasks can include things such as inspecting your furnace, water heater, and radiant heaters. Tasks like these ensure your home is ready for the winter and that these appliances are safe to use.

Inspect Your Furnace

The number one key to keeping the cold out is getting regular inspections of your heating systems. Without a solid check of the unit, you could end up paying more money down the road since the unit can fall into disrepair if not properly maintained. Most people don’t want to invest in a professional company that will come in every few months and performs a deep inspection on their heaters. But this is necessary to ensure that your heating systems are functioning properly.

The systems will need to be clean, whether ducts or vents. Make sure that you have in place a good filtering system for your home. You can use a vacuum cleaner on the internal parts of the heating system and other canisters, but you should not use water on any part of the system. If you notice any leaks, it is important to call a technician to help you with repair as soon as possible.

You should also ensure that there are no cracks or holes in the flues and chimneys, which can lead to serious issues later. Most people ignore this until it is too late, and they end up with smoke billowing through their house during a cold winter night.

Inspect Your Water Heater

Your water heater is another system that might require maintenance before the winter season starts. Both gas and electric heaters require special tools for testing, so it is best to have a technician take care of this job. During the heater repair, your technician will also want to inspect the thermostat on your system. The thermostat’s job is to detect changes in temperature and relay that information itself so it can adjust accordingly. When the thermostat is not working, the system will not be able to function properly.

Some other things that your technician might inspect on your water heater are the gas pressure, the gas valves, and the pilot light. When it comes to maintaining a warm home, you must take preventative measures to ensure everything is working properly before the harsh winter season arrives.

Radiant Heaters

Radiant heat is one of the cheapest systems for heating your home. This system uses radiators or tubes for heating rather than units that burn fuel to create warmth. Maintaining your radiant heat system is important to help save you money on your energy bills.

Even though radiant heat uses little electrical power, there must be no leaks, which can lead to severe damage. It is also important that the thermostat is set up properly and working properly. It is easiest to have your technician take care of these issues when they come to inspect the rest of your heating system.

As you can see, a lot of work goes into keeping your home warm during the winter, and that might include some heater repair or replacement before it gets too cold. The best way to ensure that your heating systems are working is to have a trained professional come in regularly and check things out.
