If you’ve noticed any offensive odors in your home, then you know how important it is to find the source ASAP. Bad smells aren’t just off-putting; they sometimes incident a serious problem that needs to be addressed by a professional. To find a smell in your home, follow these tips. The sooner you act, the safer your family will be, and the sooner you can restore your home’s air to its former glory.

Close All the Windows and Doors

Trapping the stench indoors is the last thing you want to do, but open windows and doors will cause other smells to enter your house and push the scent around. To find the origin of the smell, you’ll need to seal off any outside sources of air pollution. While you’re at it, turn off any fans you may be running to dispel the odor as well.

Step Outside

Give yourself a much-needed breath of fresh air and head outdoors while the air inside settles. Wait around 10 minutes, then head back inside to begin sniffing the air. Follow the scent to its strongest location. Does it seem to be coming from upstairs, under the floorboards, or from all over? If the latter is the case, it could be coming from your air vents.

Get a Professional’s Help

If the smell cuts off at a wall, you’ll want to contact a plumber right away. Foul odors trapped behind walls often indicate a leak, and the stench could result from mold growth or a sewage problem, both of which can be hazardous to your health.

A common culprit for bad smells in the home is a full septic tank that needs to be emptied. Septic tank pumping services can find out if this is the problem and can take care of it quickly. If it’s not your septic tank, they may be able to talk to you about other issues that might be at fault.

Check for Hidden Waste

It is possible that the dog or cat dragged something out of the garbage or that something got dropped and forgotten. Rotting fruit and other organic waste can quickly stink up an entire house. The same goes for pet waste that’s in a hard-to-see location. If your pet tends to have a lot of accidents indoors, the smell may be caused by damaged carpet. A professional cleaning service can help lift the odors and restore your floors’ appearance, too.

Beware of a Gas Leak

Natural gas is odorless, but a strong, rotten eggs smell is added to alert people when they are in danger. If this smell ever fills your home, shut off the gas and get outside. Call the gas company and let them know you suspect a leak. Never stay indoors if you suspect a gas leak, and take your pets outside with you, too.

Many offensive home odors point to major problems in your house. Some can be dangerous and lead to health risks. However, many offensive home odors can be remedied with a deep clean or a professional plumber or HVAC repair. By identifying the source early, you can call the right person to help.
