Well, you have to face reality, it happened. You must move out on short notice, and there is no way around it. This situation happened to a lot of people, and it is not so pleasant. While many people crack under this kind of pressure, my goal is to show you how to handle a short notice move and not lose your mind.

Believe me, it is possible! If you organize yourself, act fast and stay precise, everything will be done before you know it. So, as there is no time to waste, let’s start!

A short notice move – accept it!

Number one thing to do if you wish to handle a short notice move and not lose your mind is to just accept it. People try to avoid dealing with issues and postponing what has to be done. Be smart about it. Accept the truth, and start dealing with consequences at once. To help you out, here is a small checklist to follow:

  • plan and organize
  • set deadlines
  • consider expenses
  • find help

These four simple steps will help you to act quickly. Let’s see how!

Plan and organize

With everything in life, it is important to have a plan. That is especially important if we talk about a short notice move. There are plenty of moving mistakes that will stress you out. However, if you plan ahead, you might avoid most of them.

For starters, think about your belongings. When moving on short notice, it is crucial to consider what is worth packing, and what is not. We all have so many things we don’t use anymore, but keep them for the sake of memories and sentimental reasons. That is a big no-no if you wish to have a fast move. Only pack what you need.

As a matter of fact, create your own checklist. Keep track of all the important points so you can always stay on schedule.

Set deadlines

When we talk about creating a moving checklist, the number one priority is to set deadlines. First, consider the date when you must leave the apartment or house. That is when everything must be completed if you wish to have a stress-free relocation.

Once you know your move out date, everything else will be easier to plan. Allocate enough time for packing, organizing moving services, and any other requirements you might have.

When setting up these deadlines, it is also important to think about the amount of time you need to finish a specific task. If you don’t allocate enough time for each task, you will miss deadlines and fall behind schedule. That is one reason why you should hire professional movers, they can do the heavy lifting for you and save you a lot of time.

Consider expenses

It is hard to get back on track when in a tight financial situation. If you, on top of everything, have to organize a short notice move, you might feel in a pickle.

The best way to handle finances during relocation is to think about all the possible expenses you might have:

  • buying packing materials
  • hiring movers
  • organizing a vehicle
  • gasoline expenses
  • paying the final rent
  • any additional expenses, like food, etc.

Knowing how to deal with these issues will help you save money. The first thing you must do is divide your expenses into two categories.

The first category is all the expenses that you must cover. For example, paying the final rent, or hiring a moving company. There is no way around it. Calculate how much money you need for those expenses, and check your budget. If you don’t have enough to cover everything, consider asking friends or family for assistance. Furthermore, you can also consider a DIY move, which is a bit more difficult, but also cheaper.

The other category represents all the expenses that you don’t have to pay immediately, or not at all. For example, you don’t have to buy packing materials. Old newspapers and free boxes are all you need. You can also ask friends or family to help with packing, instead of hiring a professional moving company.

When it comes to eating during this stressful period, it is crucial to stay hydrated and energized. Eat fruit, cereals, or anything that will keep your energy levels up. You can also prepare some light food for the road. Still, decide what is the budget for food, and try not to spend more than you initially planned.

Finding help

Finding help is crucial for every relocation. The biggest issue with a short notice move is that you can’t easily find a place to stay. If you need more time to rent a new apartment, turn to your friends and family. Ask if you can stay at their place for a couple of days until you know what to do next.

You can always help with the chores around the house. It is important to have a backup plan, and that is a great way to do it. If you talk to a couple of friends, you might even cover yourself for 15 days or more. That is plenty of time to find another place to live.

Movers are also quite helpful if you are short on time. Sure, they cost money, but they are worth every dollar.

Everything will be fine!

For the end, I want to tell you that everything will be fine! Most of all, you should repeat that to yourself. A lot of people went through the same situation and pulled through, and so will you. Staying positive during the entire situation is crucial if you wish to handle a short notice move and not lose your mind. Even if you think that you are alone in this, you are not! Your friends and family will help you. I also want to motivate you to share your experience with others, and help them if possible! Good luck!
