Breast augmentation, also known as “breast implants” or “augmentation mammoplasty”, is a surgical procedure to enhance and enlarge the breast area. It is used to restore or reconstruct breast tissue in some patients. For others, it is used for cosmetic purposes to increase breast volume with a natural appearance.
This procedure can do more than enlarge the breast area, as it can also improve the appearance and the shape of breasts, making this a go-to surgery for women looking to boost their self-esteem, especially after pregnancy or weight changes.
Essentially, with breast augmentation, a silicone or saline implant is inserted beneath the chest muscle or breast tissue. This can also involve fat grafting from other parts of the body to the chest area, depending on your needs and desired look.
It’s no surprise that breast implants have been made popular by celebrities and have really shaped pop culture over the past decades. In this article, we will delve into the details surrounding this popular cosmetic surgery, and how it has historically been viewed. Keep on reading to gain perspective and insight into the world of breast augmentation.
The Influence of Celebrities on Breast Implants
In today’s world, breast implants are commonplace among celebrities and those regularly in the spotlight. While sometimes they are glaringly obvious, at other times, they tend to go unnoticed. Recently, options for breast implants have expanded and women can now choose from silicone, saline, gummy bear, and fat graft methods.
While saline implants are the most popular choice, silicone implants are known for their natural look, teardrop shape, and soft material resembling real breast tissue. These enhancements make silicone the most expensive option. However, gummy bear implants strive to combine a natural look with affordability. Fat-grafting augmentations involve removing fat from other areas via liposuction and inserting it into the breast area.
Celebrities from all walks of life, such as Kourtney Kardashian and Christina Aguilera, have had breast surgery procedures done to enhance their natural chest area. Reality stars, movie stars, and even those working behind the scenes in films have influenced breast augmentation.
With more celebrities undergoing these procedures, it’s no surprise that new beauty standards are being shaped that glorify enhanced breasts. The desire for breast implants has moved beyond the realm of celebrities, though, and many regular working women are today seeking out cosmetic breast enhancements.
A Historical Perspective on Breast Augmentation
Historically speaking, breast augmentation has been performed for over a century now. It was first performed in 1895 to help fill out a defect in a woman’s breast tissue. Serious complications resulted from early breast augmentation attempts, however, which consisted of inserting a mixture called paraffin (olive oil and petroleum jelly) into the breast tissues.
As these were not received well, doctors switched to using silicone-based injections to augment the chest area of women. Silicone injections came with serious complications as well, such as embolism, skin slough, and even death. Some other failed attempts at breast augmentation included the use of prosthetics that were made from polyvinyl alcohol sponges and polyethylene tapes.
Over time and into the later half of the 1900s, contained silicone was created and used. Various combinations of saline and silicone implants have been formulated into the present day, although silicone implants are limited for use by the FDA and only saline-filled implants are available regularly for women.
The modern-day breast implant procedure essentially originated in the 1960s by Dr. Frank Gerow and Dr. Thomas Cronin. The first recipient of this procedure was Timmy Jean Lindsey in 1962, a mother of six children, living in Houston, Texas at the time. Now an elderly woman, Lindsey still recalls the procedure and has ever since been content and elated with the results.
Breast Implants and Their Impact on Celebrity Careers
While it’s no surprise that many celebrity women have had breast surgeries and implants throughout their careers, there are some cases where breast implants have improved celebrity careers or even skyrocketed them.
Kaley Cuoco underwent breast augmentation when she was only 18, which has helped her find success in her career and improved her self-confidence. Christina Aguilera also underwent breast surgery in the 1990s to enhance her small frame and bring her breast size to a C-cup. Other celebrities with breast implants include Halle Berry, Victoria Beckham, and Kate Hudson.
Due to a high chance of breast cancer, Angelina Jolie underwent a double mastectomy, and then a breast augmentation to restore her previous look. This later impacted her career and image, as she is well known for being an advocate for women’s rights and for preventative and reconstructive surgeries.
When breast implants are tastefully and professionally done, they can impact celebrity careers and improve the confidence and self-esteem of young starlets looking to shine under the spotlight.
Risks and Complications Associated With Breast Implants
As with all invasive surgeries and procedures, they are not without risks and potential complications, especially if aftercare instructions are not followed. Some of the risks pertaining to the breast implant procedure include breast pain, rupture, deflation, scar tissue, and more.
Successful results are never a guarantee and you should always keep in mind that healing can be delayed, infections can occur, and end results can be asymmetrical or not as desired. Also, certain very rare cancers, such as breast implant-associated squamous cell carcinoma and breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma, can result from breast implant surgery.
It’s important to be realistic in your expectations of what breast implants can do and to have frank, honest discussions with your plastic surgeon. Remember to always do your research and find a reputable board-certified plastic surgeon for any kind of cosmetic surgery, including breast augmentation.
