Sadly, the world lost one of the greats of modern fashion this year. Karl Lagerfeld will always be deemed an industry icon. When he passed away in February, the entire fashion world was in mourning. In this blog post, we are going to take a look at the rise of fame of Karl Lagerfeld, as well as taking a look at his love of Arabian fashion. After all, everyone knows that Lagerfeld was always one to speak his mind! With that being said, continue reading to discover everything you need to know.
The life and rise of Karl Lagerfeld
Karl Lagerfeld was known for his own distinctive sense of style first and foremost. He was instantly recognizable due to his tinted sunglasses and dark suits teamed with white hair, which he would wear in a pony-tail. This was all part of his intelligently crafted persona. He once said that he felt like he was a caricature of himself, and this was something that he liked. He said it was like wearing a mask, making the Carnival of Venice last throughout the entire year.
The designer, who was born in Germany, is, of course, best known for his association with the French fashion brand Chanel. This link began back in 1983. The brand was not as we know it today prior to Lagerfeld taking over. He turned it into one of the most valuable couture houses in the world, adding glitz to prim tweed suits, slashing hemlines, and much more. However, it is not just Chanel that Lagerfeld is famous for. He has also turned out collections for his eponymous label and LVMH’s Fendi.
His love of Arabian fashion
One thing that Karl Lagerfeld was known for was his controversial comments. He was often criticized for negatively commenting on women’s weight, for example. He has also made a number of controversial comments about the Middle East. Nevertheless, this does not distract from the fact that he had a clear love for Arabian fashion. He released a collection that had been completely inspired by Egypt in 2018. Models went down the runway at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in outfits that were based on Ancient Egypt. This included shoulder-length gold earrings, golden feather adornments, glistening dresses, gold brimmed hats, and golf-thigh high boots. The models strutted their stuff down a floodlit temple. It is definitely one of the most impressive runway shows that we have seen in recent times.
You may think that looking to the Middle East for inspiration in one of his collections is not enough to deem him a lover of Arabian fashion. However, this was not the only time that Lagerfeld looked to this part of the world for inspiration. He also made an appearance in Dubai five years ago, showcasing his Cruise Collection in the city. This collection is truly stunning, to say the least, having been taken inspiration from the hazy nights of Arabia, using an Orientalist vision. It featured the heavy use of mosaic-style patterns, as well as diaphanous jumpsuits, ghutra-pattern-inspired coats, and harem pants. This collection certainly had a massive impact on the world of fashion. If you are an avid follower of the latest trends, you will have noticed that harem pants became the go-to garment after this collection, with many high street retailers creating their own alternatives.
Lagerfeld also worked with Aline Asmar D’Amman, a Lebanese architect, on renovating a hotel in Paris. Plus, in 2017, he photographed Bella Hadid for Vogue Arabia. This was the first September issue of the magazine. In the unusual moments whereby Lagerfeld was not at work, he would retire to one of the many homes he had across Europe. All of these homes were luxurious and opulent copies of interiors from the 18th-century.
