If you are planning on travelling this year, then there are a couple of essential pieces you will need for backpacking. Figuring out what to bring can be a challenge in itself with the number of items you can fit in your small backpack. It takes real skill to be able to distinguish what you actually need, compared to what you would like to bring with you. Being able to do this makes all the difference when you are backpacking for a couple of months.

There are a couple of questions that are always asked when people start their journey such as what gear should I take when backpacking? Or what are the essentials for backpacking? Well, in this article we will go through the absolute essentials that you should be taking when backpacking.

Here you will find a backpacking packing list for your trip abroad. If your budget doesn’t allow some of these, then find cheaper alternatives, as you will be sorry you left these at home, so let’s get started!

A Travel Backpack

Let’s start with the obvious; every backpacker needs a quality backpack. At the end of the day, you can’t expect to be a backpacker without one really, it pretty much defeats the object. Picking the right backpack for your needs is essential, so it is important to plan your journey and decide where you’re going and how long for. If you don’t, then you could be at risk of not having enough space, or alternatively, having a bag that is too big for you to carry. Depending on how long your travels are will determine how big your bag should be.

  • 1-3 months: 40-60 litres
  • 3-6 months: 60 litres
  • 6-12 months: 60-80 litres

Another factor you need to take into consideration is your height. If you are on the shorter side of the spectrum, then aim to stay with a 60-litre or less bag. The backpack should include lockable zips, internal organizers and an adjustable back system. If the bag has a detachable daypack, then this will also save you money and will allow you to travel with ease.

A Travel Towel

A standard towel is large, bulky and heavy, this is not ideal for backpacking as it would probably fill your bag before anything else. Now, with innovation, you can find microfibre travel towels that fold away easily and dry you faster than a standard towel, so it’s pretty much a win-win situation.

All professional travellers will have a microfibre towel, which saves space. Don’t get us wrong, they are not as comforting as a standard towel, but it is a price you must pay when travelling. There are many reputable ones out there, so take a browse and find one for your specific needs.

Packing Cubes

The issue with backpacking is that you only have limited space, and when you are travelling for a while, it can be challenging to fit everything you need in your backpack. There’s nothing worse than having an unorganised backpack as you have to rummage through to the bottom to find your toothbrush. Instead, having packing cubes can significantly help you be more organized and you will find that more items will fit in your bag.

International Plug & Power Bank

It’s unavoidable to not charge the devices you take with you on your travels. Whether it’s your mobile, camera or laptop, chances are they are going to run out of battery when you’re away. This is why it is essential that you bring an international adaptor and power bank with you. Most devices come with a USB power lead now, so ensuring that your adaptor is as these will make your tech packing much lighter.

Sleep Mask & Ear Plug

Hostels are not the best places to get a good night’s rest, so ensuring that you have a pair of earplugs and a sleep mask will ensure you have a much better rest. They’re not only great for when you are in a hostel, but if you were on a long haul flight, drive or ferry trip, then this is the perfect opportunity to catch some z’s. You won’t believe how many travellers forget about these essentials, but you will be glad that you have them once you are away.

A Watch

If you are going travelling, then a quality watch and watch band are essential. Whether you are climbing the alps, going to the desert or are in a rainforest, you want a watch that will be durable enough to withstand the elements. A NATO watch strap will help your watch remain safe and secure and will not allow it to fall off your wrist. If you have a luxury watch, then a NATO watch strap is something you can guarantee will help you on your travels.

There are many travel essentials that should be on your list, but it’s all about balance, and what you can fit into your bag. Follow these guidelines, and your packing will be much easier.
