  • Optimizing Your Outdoor Hunting Experience: Must-Have Accessories

Hunting is a time-honored tradition, but it sometimes needs something a little extra to fully optimize the process. Here are six must-have accessories to round out most hunting gear, outdoor accessories, and outdoor equipment.

Headlamp

Being able to see is a taken-for-granted ability. Having a hands-free light source is a fantastic addition to any set of outdoor accessories, outdoor equipment, and hunting gear. Headlamps are affordable, lightweight, and easily carried light sources.

Whether worn around the neck or actually on the head, headlamps are great for early morning or late evening hunts to have some extra light. From searching through a pack to processing animals, that extra light will make a difference. Which in turn makes the whole experience better.

Cleaning Kit

While a lot of maintenance is not planned for in the field, things can happen. Whether the ammunition used is known to dirty the gun heavily or something like black powder or corrosive ammunition is used, having a way to clean out the gun is very useful.

Outdoor equipment, outdoor accessories, and hunting gear all pivot around mitigating risk. Cleaning a gun is one of the many tasks that need to be done for safety, and a cleaning kit is the most efficient toolset to ensure the gun is in working order in the field.

Having a cleaning kit can help mitigate the risk of using firearms, such as when people hunt together and use similar guns. Not everyone is in the habit of cleaning their gun when it gets too dirty or has a malfunction. Being able to clean someone else’s gun is a perfect way to support others in the hobby.

Plinking Gun

A gun for plinking or recreational target shooting might seem like an odd addition to the list of hunting gear, outdoor equipment, and outdoor accessories. But it is actually a great way to relax at the main camp.

A small 22 pistol can be stashed in the gear without much hassle. It can be used to work on aim, have friendly competitions, and defend against small pests. They also make great conversation pieces.

Having something else to do other than hunt is often overlooked, but it is a great way to fill up time when people are not actively out in the field hunting.

Extra Rope/Cordage

Rope or cordage is a necessary addition to your hunting gear, outdoor equipment, and outdoor accessories, no matter where you are. Having a way to secure items, build shelters, and attach things to other things is an underrated solution.

A small roll of heavy-weight string, twine, or paracord can be more useful than tape in a lot of situations on a hunt. This is because it is easier to carry dozens to hundreds of feet of string than tape or other materials.

There is nothing worse than needing to tie something down and having nothing to tie it with. Spare rope and other cordage allow for those unexpected situations to be handled with skill rather than wishes.

Personal Stove

Sometimes the base camp is not in an area that has all of the creature comforts or a lot of firewood. A personal stove is a must-have accessory just in case making a campfire is out of the question.

Small gas stoves or backpack stoves can be used to make a hot drink, warm food, and disinfect water. They are a very versatile item, limited only by the imagination. For those longer hunts, personal stoves provide a safe, controlled fire option that makes the whole trip better at a lower risk of causing a forest fire than a traditional campfire.

Knife Sharpener

While it might seem obvious, knife sharpeners are not the first things on people’s minds when it comes to outdoor equipment, outdoor accessories, or hunting accessories. They are often thought of as basecamp equipment.

However, processing game in the field is much easier to do with a sharp knife, especially on larger animals. Being able to stop and resharpen a knife for an easier meat harvest makes a world of difference and convenience.

Diamond sharpeners are easily purchased, are light to carry, and can put a good edge on a knife quickly. Most of the time, a full resharpen is not necessary, so smaller pocket sharpeners to refine the edge are all that’s needed.
