Moving can be a stressful experience. Not only do you have to consider the logistics of getting your items from one place to another, but you also have to decide what exactly it is that you should bring with you. The last thing you want is to end up paying for extra transportation costs or having too much clutter in your new home. Here’s a quick guide on how to decide what to bring when moving.

Start Early

Starting early is key when it comes to moving. Make sure that your packing starts at least two weeks before you have to leave. This will give you plenty of time to sort through all of your belongings, decide what needs to come with you, and make sure that everything is properly packed up. Taking the time upfront will save you from having to rush at the last minute or arrive at your new home without essential items.

Evaluate Your Current Possessions

The first step in deciding what to bring when moving is evaluating all of your current possessions and deciding which of those items are worth taking with you. This can be done by making an inventory list of all of the items you own, categorizing them into “must-haves,” “could-haves,” and “don’t need.” This will give you a better idea of what items are essential, which ones could come in handy, and which ones can be left behind.

When it comes to deciding what to bring when moving, it’s important to know when to throw out things you don’t need. Items that are broken, outdated, or simply no longer useful should be donated, sold, or discarded. This will help lighten the load and make your move more efficient. Consider having a garage sale or donating unwanted items to a local charity or thrift store. It’s also a great way to give back and help those in need. By getting rid of unnecessary things, you will be able to bring only the items that are essential for your move and start off with a clean slate.

Consider the Size and Weight of Items

Another important factor when deciding what to bring when moving is size and weight. Bigger and heavier items can be more challenging to transport and may even incur extra costs if they exceed the limits set by the transportation company. If this is the case, it’s best to consider leaving these items behind or finding other ways to move them (e.g., hiring a separate service or specialized interstate movers).

Also, if possible, try to pack smaller and lighter items into larger boxes so that fewer boxes need transporting overall—this will help minimize costs as well as make it easier for movers on both ends of the move.

Think About Where You’re Going

When deciding what possessions should come with you during a move, think about where exactly you’re going—are there any particular amenities in your new location? Are there any specific things that would make life easier? Thinking about this ahead of time will help ensure that whatever possessions come with you are actually useful once you arrive at your new home.

Donate Unused Items

If there are things in your home that you haven’t used in months or even years, consider donating them instead of trying to bring them along with you on the move. Donating unused items can help declutter your home before the move, making it easier for packing and unpacking both at your old house and at your new one. You don’t want unnecessary clutter taking up space in boxes during the move, so donating these items can be a great way to get rid of them while also doing something good for others who may need them more than you do now!

Give Away Items People May Want

You may have items that you no longer need but could be useful to someone else. These items could include old bed frames and curios, baby cribs, strollers, and even chairs and side tables. If you know friends, family, or even acquaintances who would like these items, consider giving them away instead of taking them with you when you move.

It’s a great way to share something valuable while also lightening the load in your packing boxes and making your move easier and more cost-effective. Plus, it’s a nice way to show someone else that you care about them, as well as a great way to downsize while also helping out someone in need. You could even use online sites to help facilitate this process—just make sure that the person who takes the item is reliable and trustworthy!

Deciding what possessions should come with you during a move can be tricky, and stressful! However, if approached strategically, it doesn’t have to be so hard. By making an inventory list of all your possessions, considering size/weight factors when packing up boxes, and thinking ahead about where exactly it is that you’re going, and donating and making lists—you’ll find yourself better prepared for your next big move.
