You may suffer from the sleep disruptions from time to time. Yet, when they become chronic, prolonged, and frequent, they may result from a sleep disorder. Sleep disorders can negatively affect your social, work, and home life. Fortunately, available treatments can help you overcome your sleeping problems. First, let’s look at some of the most common signs that you may suffer from a sleep disorder.

Excessive Daytime Drowsiness

If you feel drowsy throughout the day, you may suffer from a sleeping disorder like sleep apnea. If you suffer from sleep apnea, you will experience pauses in breathing that can last up to 10 seconds. You may not be aware that you stopped breathing during sleep. As a result, you may have trouble waking up and feel drowsy and lightheaded throughout the day. Sleep apnea can cause various health issues, like high blood pressure, depression, heart disease, and stroke.

Loud Snoring

You may not be aware of snoring while sleeping, but the person trying to sleep next to you is aware of it. Snoring can be a problem and cause serious health consequences if it goes unchecked. It is a good idea to seek professional medical advice from an ENT specialist if your snoring is too loud or persistent.

When you snore, your throat relaxes, and tissue in the back of the throat narrows and blocks the airway. As a result, the air is forced through the narrow airway, creating a choking sound. An ENT may recommend treatment options, including:

  • Lifestyle changes
  • Changing sleeping positions
  • Avoiding alcohol before bed
  • Maintaining a healthy weight

Having Trouble Falling Asleep

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder. Most people will have brief bouts of insomnia in their life that will eventually go away without treatment. Unfortunately, some people will have severe insomnia that requires a sleep expert’s treatment.

Many factors can cause insomnia. These include poor sleep habits, mental health problems, and medical conditions. The severity of insomnia varies, but the more severe it gets, the more it is worth seeking medical help. Insomnia will affect your energy level and overall mood, as well as your performance and productivity.

If you have any of these sleep disorder symptoms, you may suffer from a sleep disorder. Thankfully, sleep disorders are treatable. However, treatment options depend on the underlying causes. Non-drug treatments, like cognitive behavioral therapy and sleep medications, are available to help improve your sleeping habits. However, it is best to follow the advice of a sleep expert to get the proper treatment.
