Moving into your new home is exciting, tedious, and overwhelming all at the same time. With all of the preparation that it takes to move in your home, it’s easy to overlook home security. Many crooks will target new homeowners before they can occupy their new abode. To avoid falling victim and to protect your home for the future, take some proactive steps to protect yourself and your family.

Install a Security System

When you first move into a new place, get a security system set up. There are many different kinds of security systems, and each provides a different level and type of protection. Some will simply have an unmonitored alarm that scares off intruders. Other security systems send an alert to your phone about intruders and notify the police of any attempted break-ins.

Your system may also include cameras or motion sensors that detect suspicious activity. It’s a good idea to get your system set up as one of your top priorities when you move in. You might also save on your homeowner’s insurance by installing a quality security system.

Secure Your Windows

Windows are a common entry for thieves. Reinforce them with bars and grills to stop burglars in their tracks. You can also add security film to prevent any unwelcome eyes from staring into your home.

Change Your Locks

It’s unlikely that you know the full history of the home you purchased. Neighbors, family, babysitters, and other friends of the previous homeowners could have spare keys. Locksmiths in your local area can put new locks for your home before you move in. Professional locksmiths can give you extra peace of mind and help keep your home safe in the future.

Install Indoor and Outdoor Lighting

Thieves operate in the shadows, and a dark house is a prime target. Motion detected lights are a quick and easy way to have crooks avoid your home. Most homeowners overlook indoor lighting, but the inside of your house should also be well lit. If you have smart lights in your home, you can turn them on and off while you’re out. Having a couple of lights on while you’re out gives the impression that you are home, and most criminals will keep on walking.

Get to Know Your Neighbors

Take a walk around your neighborhood when you move in, and make friends with neighbors who you can trust. They can help protect your home if you go on vacation, and they can notify you of any suspicious activity around your home or in the neighborhood. You’ll be less likely to be a victim with more eyes on your home, and it’s comforting having the extra safety net. Friendly neighbors can also keep an eye on your pets and other personal belongings.

Safety and security should be your top priority when you move into your home. Whether you are moving for the first time or you have plenty of experience moving, knowing that your home is secure will make the process a much more positive experience.
