We have prepared a detailed guide that will answer both of your questions. The post contains detailed information about core web vitals, its types and their impact on SEO rankings.

What are Core Web Vitals?

Core web vitals (CWV) stand for a set of metrics standardized by Google used to determine the user experience of a website. The metrics determine the interactivity, performance and visual stability of websites. Google measures these metrics and then makes the decision of ranking a website. It means that for a website to rank higher its core web vital metrics needs to be optimized. The poorer the metrics the lower the ranking will be. Let’s understand what these core web vitals are. The CrUX (Chrome User Experience Report) is the official data set core web vitals metrics.

Types of Core Web Vitals and Their Impact

There are three parts of core web vitals including Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP) and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). The first one measures the loading speed of the webpages, while the second one measures page responsiveness whereas the third one measures webpages’ visual stability.

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

The Largest Contentful Paint measures the loading speed of webpages; the point from when the webpage starts loading to the point when the page’s main content becomes visible. If your page’s loading time between these two points is 0 to 2.5 seconds then it will receive a “Good” rating, however your page will receive “Needs Improvement” if the loading time is 2.5 to 4.0 seconds. Whereas your page will be rated a “Poor” if the loading time exceeds 4.0 seconds.

If you receive a “Good’ rating then your website is good to go and will rank higher. However, the SEO rankings will be impacted significantly if it receives either “Needs Improvement” or “Poor.” The ranking will hit bottom lines with “Poor” rating. You can improve LCP ratings by removing unused CSS and Chrome DevTools can help you find and remove them. Along with that you can delay the non-critical CSS content to improve page speed.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP)

Google introduced Interaction to Next Paint (INP) to core web vitals ranking factors replacing First Input Delay (FID) on March 12, 2024. Core web vitals impact on SEO is significant as INP measures page responsiveness to measure user experience of the page. It takes data of every interaction including fingertap, keyboard or a click and measures the one with the longest response time. Just like LCP, INP also rates your webpages “Good, Needs Improvement, and Poor” based on the response time.

If the INP is less than 200 milliseconds then the webpage is categorized as “Good”, whereas the rating shifts to “Needs Improvement” if the response time is between 200 – 500 milliseconds. Your page will be given a “Poor” rating if the response time exceeds 500 milliseconds. Having a slow response time is one of the worst core web vitals issues that can be fixed by yielding to the main thread to prioritize user’s interactions. Along with that you can also reduce the response time by removing the unnecessary data.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)

By far we read about LCP that rates webpages on the basis of loading time and INP that rates webpages on the basis of response time. Now comes Cumulative Layout Shift that determines whether the webpage ranking will be higher or lower on the basis of visual stability of a page load. It measures how much content moves around when the page is loading. It also categorizes webpages into “Good, Needs Improvement and Poor”.

The webpage is considered as good when CLS is 0-0.1, whereas the page needs improvement when it is 0.1-0.25. The webpage is considered a poor performer when the CLS exceeds 0.25. The more the CLS value the more users will get frustrated. You can reduce the value by adjusting the size of your content to prepare the browser for your content before it loads. Apart from that you must also reduce the animations and transitions of your page for 0-0.1 CLS score.

Conclusion

It is necessary to understand core web vitals impact on SEO as poor core web vitals shows how poor user experience the web page has. You can check your page’s Core Web Vitals reports using vital on-page seo tools like Google Search Console, CrUX, PageSpeed Insights, etc. based on your business needs and requirements. These tools help you measure the score and allow you to take actions accordingly. Improving Core Web Vitals is considered as the most transparent ranking factor in Google rankings.
