Have you ever wondered how the flow of water and other fluids is controlled in big industries? Well, instead of the heavy machinery and advanced equipments used, there are certain simple but useful devices that help in the flow management process. One of these devices is a flow switch.

A flow switch provides certain benefits for big industries and other common household applications. That is why it has a huge importance in mechanical and industrial applications. With the progress in science and technology, the flow switches have been improved in the performance. They have been reduced in size and have become more compact. To fully understand the working of a flow switch, let us first understand what a flow switch is.

What is a Flow Switch

A flow switch is a device that is used to monitor and control the flow rate and pressure of various liquids and fluids involving different kinds of processes. A flow switch is even able to record the flow rate of gaseous media throughout a system. A flow switch can also be regarded as a flow sensor as it “sense” the various factors which are responsible for an efficient process of flow in a system.

Difference Between a Flow Switch and a Flow Meter

A typical flow switch is one that not only measures the flow rate but also controls and manages the accurate flow rate of the liquid. If a device just records and displays the flow rate values on the screen, then it is more like a flow meter rather than a flow switch.

A flow switch is the one that gives you the ability to adjust the flow rate values as described by the user and make changes to the values that are responsible for the flow rate, pressure, and other such factors.

Working of a Flow Switch

Let us understand how a flow switch works and what it is. Let us first understand the basic components of a flow switch.

The main types of flow switches contain a paddle or magnetic trigger attached to an integrated circuit. It is kept in the channel through which the liquid of fluid is flowing. The paddle gets rotated as the fluid or liquid flows along with it. Then, the rotating paddle sends a signal to the transducer, and then it is again reflected back.

The signal produced by the transducer is in raw format. Thus, it is sent to the transmitter, which converts it into a readable format. Further, the transmitter manipulates the signal and check whether it complies with the predefined values of the user. If there is a mismatch, it sends signals to the circuit systems and carries out further changes in the mechanical parts and equipments. The required changes contribute to the change in the flow rate and other factors. Hence, the changed values are the accurate ones that were required by the user in the first place.

The main benefit of a flow switch is that it can track, report, and change the wrong values to the normal. It works for the whole system and for a certain part of the system also. If the rate exceeds the predefined values set by the user, it immediately triggers an alarm and takes necessary actions. It will automatically change the system pressure, close the valves, and turn off the inlet supply to make the flow rate back to normal. The same case applies to the drop in system flow rate. It takes all the necessary actions to make the flow rate right.

In this way, flow switches are able to monitor, report, and control the flow rate of liquid or gas through a specific part of a system or through the entire system, ensuring flow stays within those pre-set parameters. If the rate exceeds or drops below what’s required, it can instantly trigger a series of actions such as activating an alarm, powering on a pump, diverting flow, shutting off parts of the system. Which actions a switch performs will depend entirely on the type of switch and what it’s been designed for.

Hence they serve a great purpose for accurate process management. That is why a flow switch is also regarded as a “flow sensor” as it not only gauges the flow rate but it is good enough to control and manage the fluid flow with extreme accuracy and precision.

Conclusion

Thus we see, a flow switch as a useful instrument for various kinds of industries. If you have fully understood the working process of the flow switch, it will become easy for you to choose the right one for your need. However, if you have any concerns regarding the flow switch, you should do proper research for that.
